Any other options that you've used? For me, when that happened to me, I ask a friend and he recommends one for me to use: http://www.primovpn.net.

It works well for me :D

That's for lan. For overall gaming you generally want it lower since output is not so much important as latency. Tho generally yeah, default is fine unless if you're a tweak geek.
