Set up a server?

Sun Jan 29, 2006 2:59 pm

Need help.
I'm planning to set up a small server on my other computer cus i wanna play with a few friends. I have a 8/1Mbit internet.

* Is my internet connection speed enough?

* Do i need a supercomp to run it? Specs..?

* Do i need a second game for the server? cd-key..

* How many players can fit without problems? 6 (3on3) or more..?

* Do i need a static ip?

* Anything else?

Yes

No (see below)

No CD key is needed for a server.

Good question, let us know :)

No, you bind to the IP of the box (ie: 192.168.1.101). Static LAN IPs are easy to set up and make IP forwarding from your router much easier (see below).

* Anything else?

Make sure your router forwards your RtCW port (27960 or whatever) to your server box and any firewalls you are running allow it through.

I've run a shrub server on my cable connection (10/1), on a PII 300 w/ 256M RAM. (yes, it works fine) :) Back when I was in aL!3n, we had a 5 on 5 scrim once, and it did not lag.

I don't understand why people are trying to set servers up. There's about 500 RTCW players left in this world. 99% of the servers set up won't get a regular following and it seems like a waste of money and time. If you're gonna use it for scrims and that's it that's one thing. You would think to wait for RTCW2 and set a server up on day 1 to get the regular following. I've seen alot of servers last a week if that and crash and burn. This is just my opinion.Good luck and i hope it works out.

Shooter just meant as good advice but if I were you I would also check with your ISP. Some European ISP's forbid their users to run servers.

I'm doing this for my own pleasure. Not for the community.
Main reason: to practice how to run a server and experience great ping and admin rights and a 1 on1 or 3on3 once and a while.

...because...

in 6-7 months i probably get 10-100Mbit fiberoptic internet in my house. So when RTCW2 (or other game) comes out, i'll sure be there from day one..

Thanks for responses. I'll be back with that IPbinding and forwarding stuff. I'm a noob but gotta start somewhere.
