I wonder if that's the best form though. I think having 'legs' is the best solution for all around travel (stairs, ladders, etc).

I definitely agree. I think the idea of a hand like foot, something that can grasp and hold onto things is interesting. I was also thinking a dog like robot might be useful.

The main problem I think is that bipedal motion is so difficult to replicate, only in the 1980's did computer scientists develop the necessary algorithms a robot would need to balanace while walking on two feet, and running is still somewhat difficult of the fact that sometimes there are no legs touching the ground. But it's entirely possible that this advanced research could have solved this.

I really don't think this idea is so far fetched, so it's nice to hear that somebody else sees the same potential in it. Interestingly, I think the silence in the U.S. on this issue means their might be something in the works. I checked the DARPA convention but nothing. The Pentagon did recently buy a Galsgow company that might be on to something. There is also this article which explains the idea is not new http://www.newstarget.com/002080.html

I would say that within 10 years there may be a robot soldier

Meh the one time we have an interesting discussion here and ppl still complain ;)

Hmm well a monkeydogbot sounds good but I still like the idea of a real humanoid droid.. What it lacks in arms it can make up for in intuitive controls imo. Give a soldier 2 gloves, some boots and a small VR station and he wouldn't need any extra training at all. 6 or more legs are a lot more stable but also a lot more cumbersome & complex when it comes to rotation or even simple forward movement.

Hey here's a thought, no legs at all.. Have a big hollow wheel for the basic frame, build some minigun mounted robot arms in the center and let er rip.. I got the idea watching this smiley :ar15: :P

Then again.. Probably in the end a mix would work best, some tracked heavy units, some bipeds with increased maneuvarability, some multi legged for special ops..

Oh don't forget a flame thrower! :flame:

FORMAT C:/Program Files/Beowolf

This thread is probably dead anyway, just wanted to see if other people put 2 and 2 together. The ability to control an RTCW character can easily be applied to a robot, the programming is already there. The only impediment is the technology.
