9800 pro at 500Mhz core

(not mine, from hardocp.com)

So after finally caving and buying a 9800 pro, I didn’t have much money left to burn on a fancy cooling system to OC the card, but I still had to see just how fast it would go. Enter the uber-cheap ass overclock:

Old Volcano P4 Heatsink from Fry’s $4.90
Pack of two 20ohm variable resistors $0.90
Time with hacksaw and beld sander to make heatsink fit FREE
Modding your 9800 pro to run aircooled with a 502MHz Core Priceless

I think thats the highest Ive heard of on a 9800 pro with just aircooling. Did he do any volt mods on that?

you can overclock the card quite HIGH with just stock cooling.

I run my 9700np at 355 from 275 core, with stock cooling, and havent had a problem in 3/4 of a year. the memory is a bit different story though. it only goes up to 303 from 270 but that's still a good OC with just stock cooling.

Just keep pushing it higher and higher until you see artifacts, then back down a bit and you should be good.

theres always a risk somethign will damage, but chances are it won't if you don't over do it.
