DDR Ram

Mon Mar 10, 2003 10:21 pm

Need some feedback on the following question, it's something a friend asked me about and I don't know the answer.

What are the pros and cons of buying high or low latency DDR2700 ram?

Crucial sells a pair of CL 2.5 512meg dimms for $160
Corsair sells a pair of CL 2.0 512meg dimms for $294
(CAS latency 2-2-5-T1)

Is it worth the price difference? My opinion is no, I can't see it making a big enough difference considering the rig he is building is for games alone. Thoughts?

If you are planning on going to the extremes with overclocking, get good memory. The high latency with be of a benifit if you try to raise the boards bus speeds to get the most out of your CPU..

If not go with low.. and those prices are waaaayyy high..

Check out http://www.pricegrabber.com . Also PC-2700 can run at 333mhz FSB, so if your board cannot go faster than 266mhz, you may find a better deal with PC-2100.

Fast memory is good. More memory is better!! :) Research a Gig of 2100.

meatshield is right...if you arent looking to overclock, the low latency memory is really wasting your money.

Thanks for the info guys. My friend isn't planning on overclocking, so I'll pass along the advice.
