Hey all, after talking with some regs earlier today about the new worm/viruses in general, I'm curious.
What do you guys run as far as firewalls? Do you have hardware firewalls or software? Or do you run both? Post and let us know.
I've got a linksys wireless g router with built in firewall. I also run Norton Internet Security on both laptop and desktop.

I use a linksys wireless b router...
Is b supposedly slower than g?

Yes. Though my laptops built in wireless is only b, so the purpose is defeated until I get a new laptop or buy a plug-in card. Though for my purposes b is fine, if I need faster I just grab an rj-45 and plug the laptop directly into the router.

I run norton internet security as well as have a hardware

Hell. Why 2 software firewalls? Most people tell me I don't even need 1 with the hardware firewall.
*EDIT* What is Norton Systemworks, does that have a firewall a la Norton Internet Security? Or is that something else?

I have Network Everywhere Router w/built in firewall and Norton Personal Firewall.....
P.S. Does anyone know how to open specific ports on the Norton Firewall? I have to run a server occasionally on a machine and it will run but no one can connect and BFSM won't connect unless I disable Norton firewall....any suggestions?

You all need to just disable your software firewalls. Why go and spend the cash for the hardware version if you're going to keep running the software one anyway? Unless you're paranoid about some hacker breaking into your home and pluggin into your LAN, all you're really doing is adding latency to your connection and load to your CPU!!!

NAT doesn't keep things from getting outside. It only protects incoming, not outgoing

If you're already running something to keep things from getting in, such as a hardware firewall and antivirus, one might ask where the things that got inside came from . . ..

Is there a real difference between McAfee and Norton?

IMO Mcafee is a memory hog (at least the AV component). I'll admit I haven't tried their latest offerings, but have been unimpressed with them in the past. I'm a big fan of Norton for AV, not so much so for their firewall (I despise NIS).
I tend to side with RC on the software v. hardware firewall, although Evan makes perfectly valid points. I do not run software, I just use my router as a firewall, along with somewhat paranoid IE settings, constant virus/adaware updates, and windows updates. To date, I've only ever been infected ONCE by a virus, which used a java exploit in IE (that I'd left open, my fault) to install itself (damn pRon!). Nav caught it immediately, and on a full system scan removed it, never to return.
