OFFICIAL: Nvidia no longer video card king

Nvidia CEO said the company will no longer focus primarily on GPU's. ATI finally won the graphics war.

So the question remains. If a company has no intention to make it's product the best it can possibly be, and strive for the #1 spot, why buy it?

Pfft, I'm sticking with ATI for sure.

this really isnt news, gpus havent been their main focus since they started making chipsets for AMD motherboards.

it's big news for hardcore gamers. we've seen what happened to them because their FX cards don't properly support DX9. Tons of people won't be buying Nv cards because of the DX9 support they lack, but was promised.

Nvidia's stock has already fallen $1.25 today alone. To add to that, ATI puts all their time and money towards vid cards, and currently the 9800 pro is faster than the 5900u. It looks pretty clear to me who's gonna have a bigger share of the graphics market in a year. a company who puts ALL it's money towards developing the fastest card, or a company who focuses more on chipsets? Which would you buy?

Wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia got out of the gracphics card market altogether. Maybe it's a good thing, so other companies like XGI can surface a bit.

Not focasing on primarily GPU's does not mean they lost the GFX war, or are done with or, or will nto continue with their GPU's as they have.

It means it is not the bulk of what they are about. It means the other markets theya re in will be just as big as their GPU's.

Before you cry 'nVidiot,' I am a happy owner of a 9700Pro.

Also, if they left he GFX market all together, we are screwed. Havign ATi and nVidia liek they are now makes a very good market place for us consumers. Competing companies liek nVidia and ATI = cheaper prices, better product, and a continually competitve spot for #1(meaning new product all the time instead of stuck on one money making chipset).

lol I won't cry "nvidiot!", I use to buy Nvidia cards all the time.

But I do think NVD's days are numbered for being the worlds leading video card company. In most newer systems, the graphics card is a Radeon, compared to a year ago when you you NEVER saw an ATI card in a prebuilt system, and I had a VERY hard time finding a store that sold recent ATi cards.

Now you see them everywhere. Nvidia probably won't disappear, but they aren't as strong as they use to be.

I guess I get caught up in the ATI/Nvidia thing because I own ATI stock; I bought it when it was $5 and now that it's sitting at $20 I just want to see the company do good for once.

Well thats fine, and I see what you're saying, but I still hate people referring to one winning and one losing, cause they didn't say they were not making anymore graphics cards. Besides that, I like ATI and they are a good company, but for me, Nvidia had the best price for the performance sort of like what tango was talking about. Because to beat the performance I got with the ATI counterpart would have been atleast 50 bucks and I know thats not a whole lot, but I'm in college and I need to save every buck I can while still having a decent system. I have a 12000 3dmark 2001 benchmark and I know its not amazing by any means, but for 900 bucks including everything on it and all name brand, I'm happy. I already decided a while back that my next card is going to be an ATI because I like they way they run anti-aliasing. That doesn't mean I don't love Nvidia. Thats why I don't really care for this "War" talk, cause they are both good companies and almost no one gives both credit at the same time, they all think one is better, I think depending on what you want, and what you can spend determines whats best. Not attacking anyone really, just giving my thoughts.

quoted from the article..."The NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun made it quite clear that the graphics industry would no longer be the primary focus point of the company."

in no way does that mean Nvidia is not making video cards anymore. i hope they still remain competitive with ATI. as one user suggested, it's good for consumers.

I understand what you are saying Horsepower. I know Nvidia won't stop making graphics cards, but it will no longer be their primary focus, which most likely means they won't be putting in the amount of R&D and money into video cards as they once did. Instead they are expanding into other areas, which isn't a bad thing.
