AMD box not POSTing

Hey folks,

Im building my brothers computer, and his 2500+ and RAM came in today, so im in the process of bulding.

He's fried 2 processors, and fried one mobo, so I think its time for me to build

Its a brand new NF7 board, brand new ram, and processor, and it has a working gfx card, hdd and cd rom. The only thing is, the front connections are non-existant (have to start by using a metalic utensial (screw driver, etc etc) and connect the two power pins)... and im starting to think this may be the problem (no ground for the front panel). There is no front panel (he tries to 'mod his boxes' but apparently striping them to the chassis.. and.. well.. nothing more)

Not sure.. monitor works, everything is in working order. Thoughts?

Not posting at all?

Only time this has happened to me was when I flashed my bios (electric shock from finger to power button) and if thats the case your pretty much fuged. And it sounds like your at risk for zapping it the way your starting it. Happened while I was building it so I just sent it back and said it didnt work for some reason. :lol:

Got a new one for free.

I think you can send a board back and get it flashed tho for a fee.

Ehh, I dont think there are any electrical failures. The box starts right up using the metalic utensial.

Im afraid of RMAing it AGAIN (for the 3rd time) because its taken upwards of 2 months PER RMA. Gah!

When I built my first one, I had a bad PS... seemed to work sometimes, but ended up frying a MB that I ended up returning... once I replaced it, everything else magically worked fine...

If that isn't it, start using duct tape, chewing gum and bailing wire on random components

Well, what about this. The box boots, fans spin HD / CDrom start.. but no visual. What gives? Could this be a bad PS?

So its booting now.....

Does your mobo have onboard video? If so, did you try to get video output from there as well as your video card?

That's what mine was doing at the time, if I remember right... seemed to go OK, light comes on, no error code beeps, fans come on... but no POST... tried clearing the CMOS and everything, but no luck...

Once I replaced the PS, then everything worked... as all my other stuff that I had just got, yet wasn't sure about, turned out to be good... (CPU, Mem, Vidcard, new MB... )

I built a new PC, and it didnt post. Turns out the PS was faulty, and it fried the motherboard and CPU.

Hopefully this is NOT what happened to you. The computer smelt like burnt toast

It is said the NF7 ver 2 needs a higher rated psu than earlier versions. I've got a 2.0 but already had an Enermax 460w so can't verify that.
360w is the minimum, and that's using a good brand, no cheapy stuff.

This is my box. It may be the power supply, but I've no money to replace it anyway. The one before this died unexpectadly and I used a different one.

First processor: A year ago. It's not fitting to hold a person to one mistake they made.
Mobo: Above - A year ago. I knew nothing.

Second processor: Not fried, you idiot. YOU tried to install the heatsink. YOU put on the heatsink wrong. YOU chipped the die on the processor.

Connections: Not the problem. I've done it before. What do you think a power switch does? Touches metal to the pins. No, it doesn't sprinkle magic "POWER ON!" dust on them.

Fucked cases: A YEAR AGO. Get over it all ready. I know I've made mistakes. Let me go on, damnit.

I know this is ranty and a flame, but suspend me, ban me, I don't care.

Forgive me. When I say boot, I meant started, as its getting power.

I would love to build his comp in my box sometime tonight, and had planned on it, but I guess this won't be the case... heh, case. No pun intended, of course.

some thoughts:

The mobo should've come in an anti-static bag, possibly with a foam insert underneath to protect the pins under mobo. Take the mobo outta the case COMPLETELY, and set it on this, on the desk near enough monitor/keyboard to be able to plug them in. You probably will need to elevate it by putting it ontop of some books, magazines, etc, so you can install the vid card (or even better, if you got the NF7-M, which has onboard vid, try it without a vid card). run the computer in the most minimal state, i.e. CPU, mem, vid (if no onboard) and p/s. If you can bear it , borrow your working p/s and maybe the front of your case (which has the power button) and use those too.

If it still will not post (it turns on, but never beeps.), you have a dead/bad part. period. If not the moibo, then it's the vid, mem, or proc. Try either putting these pieces ONE AT A TIME in your pc, or put your parts in his mobo until you narrow it down. THIS IS DANGEROUS, B/C YOU MAY KILL A GOOD PART DOING THIS. BE AWARE. I killed a stick of mem helping a buddy test his new mobo, turned out it was shorting every stick put in it (thanks ASUS!).

Now, if it posts (beeps once), or it gives beep tones, you're making progress. HOPEFULLY, if it's beeped once, you've then gotten it to boot, meaning you now have vid and can access the BIOS. From there it's just a matter of slowly rebuilding it one piece at a time until it quits working, at which point you've found your culprit. If not, the beep codes will tell you EXACTLY what's fubar, refer to the owners manual (you can download it from abit if you threw it away

).

The abit forums are a good place to go, I spend alot of time browsing in there.....I also recommend http://www.nforcershq.com for their forums, good info as well.

PS, I've killed one mobo myself playing with massive HSF (knocked off two TINY little resisters near CPU socket.....no post. DOLT!), and have put my poor computer case through so much (window mod, led mods, power button changed, new reset button, dremeled half the inside to allow for fan mounts in window and moving of HD mount, etc, etc). Best way to learn is by trying, and it can result in a few casualties along the way
