go for a record!!
not many people have the guts to voltmod a 9800. if you do, you'll probably end up with a nice uber big score in 3dmark

You know i was going to say fuck it and just go with an fx5900 ultra but I've decided to save the extra cash and get a 9800xt. I first have to buy a processor and some dual channel ddr400 or better first, but I almost have the money for that already. So probabily by christmas I'll but that and start saving for my first ATI ( I had an older one a long time ago and it sucked, but what the hell, lets give them one more shot, if the 9800XT isn't a good card lol....)

ATi's older cards were not the best, nvidia DID own that crown. but with the release of the r3xx cores (9500 & +), they quickly took that back. Current titles may be kind of a wash, but anything dx9 or later is gonna suck bad on nvidia, since they are really dx8.1 hardware. That being said, if you can't afford the 980xt, I assure you the 9800pro is still FABULOUS, as was my 9700pro (before I killed it
).

Im willing to bet nvidia cards will run better than ati cards in stalker and Doom III. Nvidia is working really hard with both id and GSC. In fact, there will be a couple of effects that only nvidia cards will be able to see in stalker.
People shouldnt knock nvidias dx9 performance anymore, it has gotten much better over the last couple months through driver optimisations.

it's these 'optomizations' that everyone is a bit uneasy with. The only reason Nvidia is working with the devopers with some games, is to MAKE the game run well with their hardware.
Take HL2 for example. Nvidia needs a special codepath which uses parts of DX8 to run the game at an acceptable speed. Why? Because Nvidia's DX9 performance isn't good enough. It's a hardware issue, which isn't something drivers can COMPLETELY compensate for.
DX9 is a standard platform. Game developers shouldnt have to engineer their games to run better on certain cards. In my opinion, it hurts the gaming industry because it allows one set of card users to have benefits.
all of this "the way it's meant to be played" stuff is optomizing games to run better on Nvidia cards. I don't think that should be happening.
ALso, if ATI is doing the same thing, I think they should stop as well. (they're NOT doing this with HL2, contrary to some people's take of it)
I hope Nvidia can jump back into the competition with their next generation of cards, because I want BOTH companies to have hardware that works well, not one that is considerably slower, then having to pay the developers to 'optomize' the game to run well.

frankly i dont care about the ethics of it. If nvidia works with a game developer to make a certain game run really well, then I have no problem with it. Especially since I have a nvidia card. Games like stalker, doom III, far cry, joint operations, and painkiller(i think) are all supported / sponsored by nvidia.
BTW, if you think ATI isnt doing the same thing with HL2 then you are being naive.

Valve spent a TON of time and resources devoping a special codepath for Nvidia hardware so the game would run better. If the game was being optomized for ATI, that wouldn't have happened.
ATI is the 'preferred' choice of hardware for this game, it's not being optomized for it. Any DX9 title runs better on ATI hardware. Take tomraider for example. That's optomized for Nvidia, yet is STILL runs better on ATI hardware.
You don't see the makers of DOOMIII developing special codepaths for ATI do you? Yet that's exactly what Valve did for Nvidia. So no, the same thing is not happening with HL2.

Nvidia is ONE of the reasons for HL2's delay, the other being the "source code leak" (which btw sounds kinda fishy IMO). If not for the time they WASTED optimizing for Nvidia's dx8.1 hardware, valve could've: 1. finished it in time for christmas 2.added extra features/levels/etc 3. etc etc
Yes, Nvidia is working closely with Id to make sure doom3 runs great on it. But it wouldn't require half the effor to make it look good on ati hardware, b/c ATi followed the Dx9 spec, nvidia didn't (they were counting on everyone doing it their way. they lost). The whole fricking point of having a standard interface (i.e. DirectX or Glide) is so the game devs, etc, can code for the interface, the hardware manfuct. can code for the interface, and the interface takes care of joining the two together. The devs are NOT supposed to be wasting time coding for specific hardware.
Yes, it is possible (maybe even probable) that ATI and Valve have some custom stuff worked out, but not at the expense of nvidia. They didn't "cripple" the nvida hardware to make ATI look better, it's just the damn hardware. As someone pointed out, their drivers can increase performance, and make the stuff work with dx9, but NOT IN DX9. It's changing stuff to make it work at essentially at dx8.1 level.
And before you go thinking I'm an ATI fanboy, I was once an Nvida fanboy, until their hardware began to suck, their drivers began to suck, and ATI began whipping their ass (the 9700pro, over 1 yr old, still can kick 5700ultras in ALOT of benchmarks).

is that before or after Futuremark released build 340 which takes out Nvidia optomizations?
after the new patch, Nvidia scores dropped like a sack of potatoes, ATI marks remained the same.
Why?
Because all the run-a-rounds NVidia had going with 3dmark are gone.
RUn it with latest build, and post your scores here if you think it's so good. I get over 5000 with my 9700 NON pro, which is over a year old.
and I'm not ragging on you or anything. I don't have any issues with you, im just saying that ATI, right now, is a better choice. I'd probably be mad too if I spend hundreds on a video card that doesn't run as fast as it should.

I havent really benched in 3d2k3 at all. I dont like 3d2k3 because its not as fun to tweak for.
ill beat your 2k3 score sometime this weekend and post the link.
Ok I'm interested greatly in these numbers, but we need system specs from anyone who participates, cause obviously the video card is not the only thing aiding rendering. That'dd be great if anyone with a specless sig would post there scores. Just for the hell of it. I have a P4 2.4ghz with 1gig ddr333, an albatron PX865PE Pro II mobo, and a Gainward GF4 Ti4000SE at 310/670 and i get 12,314 on 3dmark 2001 SE. I'm getting new ram and CPU in a month or two, I'll update this then, but for now, thats what I have. Just for compairison value cause some of these guys are going to smoke my score.
