Actually, boxers wear gloves to protect their hands - not the other guy's face. It's to prevent them from breaking their hands.

IMO, there should not be fistfighting in hockey. What is the purpose - relative to the sport itself? I realize it makes people watch.. which is kind of disturbing in itself. Does knocking out one of the opposing team's better players really help your team? And if so, why not adopt a policy of total war - just beat up the other team so they can't play.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the game in the first place, doesn't it?

Now, if you want to make a sport where people go in and just beat the hell out of one another - go ahead, but don't incorporate fighting into a game where it serves absolutely no purpose within the game itself.

How about video games? Anyone think BF1942 isn't violent?

Wether anyone likes it or not it is pretty much inherent in playing hockey that you be a boxer also. Whats that old Rodney Dangerfield joke? I went to the fight the other night and a hockey game broke out!

Now I am not saying what Bertuzzi did was anyhere near the realm of acceptable but Hockey does and always had involved an element of fighting. Its part of the allure of it as a sport.

He definetly does not deserve jail time, or life banishment from the game, thats far too harsh. The NHL handled it well giving him a suspension for the rest of the year and a $500,000 fine.

It wasn't a legal hit or such. He was blind sided then crushed to the ice and is now waiting to recover with a broken neck. In an age where local high school leagues witness murder during a game because two people fought over a call I think we can ask these pros to set a better example.

We all scratch our heads when things like Columbine happen but we never hold anything other than Ozzy's lyrics or QuakeIII responsible.

This man should answer to charges of assault and battery in a court of law and any other charges that apply to set an example to young people, and I guess to some adults, that smashing people in the back of the head is wrong and carries with it consequences.

I thought that violence was the attraction with hockey, it's not like the game is televised for any other reason; you can't even see the damn puck 90% of the time.

Well, honestly, violence was part of the initial attraction for me. But once I realize how gifted these athletes really are and how physically taxing this game must be at that level, you get a better appreciation for the game itself. I'm as amazed by the ability to gently receive a pass as anything I've seen in sports. That can't be easy.

I just wish they played on a bigger patch of ice and with a bigger puck so that I could at least pretend like I knew what was going on.

Speaking of which what exactly is 'icing' (annoying bastard rule from 'EA ice hockey' back in the day)

I'll do my best to explain 'icing' but other hockey experts can do better.

To the best of my knowledge you can't send the puck across the opponents Blue Line until at least one of your men has crossed the Center Line.
