Guess a lot of people forget about that short little Corsican, you know, the guy who kicked most of Europe's collective ass..what's his name..
The French actually have a better military record then many other countries I can think of, funny how no one ever likes to admit that.
And no, I'm not french or even of french descent, just hate seeing ignorance passed along.
As for the actual subject at hand, I had my say and voiced my thoughts on it. Then I've seen a lot of purile BS about who is the best country, which one sucks, etc. When you have no logical standpoint, don't say anything. Tis better to stand silent and be thought a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Sometimes voicing your ignorance is the only way to find out if other people think your opinion is ignorant or not. Personally I will say what I feel, sometimes it is inarticulate, misinformed, wrong, whatever, the point is I COMMUNICATE IT. So Kristov, I appreciate your contributions to this thread, but telling people to keep their idiotic opinnions to themselves would be a bad idea if they actually listened to, which I think they wont. Cheers.

Let's knitpick the "war poster" now...
(imagine this in whiny, humorless voice)
"It's not real..."
"They didn't use that kind of language in those old posters..."
"Liberals have too waged wars..."
"Whaaaaa!..."
C'mon! Join the fun! The poster pic makes fun of people and there's even cursing in it! Let's take it seriously!
Sorry. I'm just trying to keep us consistent.

Quit being such a big bully Doug. You're going to hurt all the Frenchie's feelings out there. They're sensitive you know.
But seriously, most of us are well aware of ol' two-inch and the great military victories of the French way back when. We just like to give the French a bad time because they haven't been worth a darn militarily in over a hundred years. If I didn't perceive them to be such an arrogant lot I wouldn't be so interested in giving them a hard time. Yeah, I know, an American talking about others being arrogant....

Views on whether the US should or should not be dealing with Iraq is one thing, but many of the posts here have nothing to do with that, now do they? You want to insult other countries, peoples and cultures, this really isn't the thread for it, and I don't think it's really the right forum et al. We have members from North America and Europe, probably some from Asia and Down Under(I can't spell Austrailia), and insults aimed in general will hit home with many of our members.
The USA has no RIGHT to do jack squat in any other country but it's own, that's a moral and legal fact. We do have the moral obligation, as a nation and a people, to help other countries. Big difference there, and I see a lot of people here that don't seem to understand that difference. Might does NOT make right, one of the fundemental precepts OF the United States of America. This country was founded in part to show that very thing, remember? So, simply because we happen to the be #1 empire on the planet right now doesn't make it right for us to do whatever we bloody well please, any more then it was right for England to do it when it was the #1 empire. Our country's history is already full of that crap, lets not keep adding to it, shall we? We're supposed to be the civilized nation, lets remember that if we can.
Saddam is a madman who is a threat to the planet, that's a fact, and we, along with other UN nations, will do what is necessary and NOTHING more to prevent him from doing more harm then he already has. Yes, the US has political and economic reasons for doing so, but we also have a moral obligation to do it, and I would hope the world would realize that and back the call based on the moral obligation and not let this rabid animal remain at large due to conflicting political agendas. I've said before, I could PERSONALLY care less about most of the people Saddam could directly affect with the weapons he has, I know none of them, and they are nothing but faceless numbers to me. As a human being though, I have problems with letting someone just murder people at will without reprecussion. A rabid animal is at large, not near me or mine, but it's still at large. Should we ignore it because it's not currently a direct threat to us..or take action to remove the threat BEFORE it bites us or ours? That's what it comes down to, for me, in the end.

France is the only nation that failed to fire a shot in defense of its capital, that while under ocupation rounded up its Jews for the Nazis without even being ordered to do so, that produced films and sang in niteclubs for the nazis( after the war, we were told that all Frenchman were in the Resistance).............Before all that how bout the French participation in the Munich pact that sold out the Czechs, Then after the destruction of Czechoslovokia, they had a bogus war in defense of Poland, in which they did nothing but watch the Poles get slaughtered......... Lets jump ahead to now with this socalled President of France saying that "war is a total failure", lucky for him that back then the allies didnt feel that way or there wouldnt be a France.........With tens of thousands of dead Americans buried there, the least they can do is keep their friggin mouth shut. ooooohhhh and lets not forget the fact that they tried to build a nuclear reactor for their buddies in Iraq (nuclear reactor= nuclear bomb:D )

Kristov, I generally agree with your outline of how the US SHOULD act, but you have to realize your talking about what would happen in a perfect world. Ideally the US would pursue a policy of isolation, like what Washington outlined in the Farewell Address. But this DANGEROUSLY ignores the reality. To begin with, the US economy literally depends on international trade. Stopping this trade would witness a strong recoil by the entire nation, and it is not something I would ever do. Because I believe in international trade, I also believe that the trade we have with the Middle East should be as amicable as possible. The oil we take from Saddam's regime adds up to a major current account he can use for good or ill. So when you say the
. I strongly disagree. Not only do we have the right to protect ourselves from irresponible countries but it is also sound logic. 9/11 was evidence that Saudi oil billionaires can use their wealth to negatively impact the US and other industrialized nations. Technology has made this world global which is the reality good or bad.
Lastly,
P.S. I'm not sure what to say about this:

I believe your quoting an oft said maxim of WESTERN political thought, something which is already accepted. However, many Arab countries would find that statement wholly absurd. I opened a whole nother can of worms now. But do you know what Islam literally means? Submission. So, I point this out to educate Americans to the difference that still seperates us from other people. Ignoring this difference is being naively optomistic Kristov.Originally posted by Kristov
