Hackers??

Postby bojangles » Fri Jun 13, 2003 2:57 am

Tonight I came across something that worried me a bit, my mom had received an email from a friend containing a joke picture. I thought it was funny so I had her forward it to my email account. Later I opened the picture and noticed that the homepage of the site was strange. In the address bar I removed all the information about the picture so it just had the www. .coml(im not gonna put the site address on here because I dont want anyone's computer to be hacked into) and I took me to a parent directory. In the directory one of the files was Hacked.Jpg. I opened it up and It had accessable pictures of all the stuff on my harddrive. Soon after I got a virous alert thing from my norton's antivirous. I cleaned it up easily and eversence its been fine. I'm a little bit worried and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions...ect...

Sorry about the length of this post...also if its hard to follow just tell me and I hope I can explane better...

Thanks...:help: :help: :help:

Are you sure your Norton Antivirus is up to date? Do a complete scan of all your hard drives.

Then I suggest you install a personal firewall like Norton Internet Security. It will catch traffic in and out of your computer.

Thanks chocal, I'm 100% sure my antivirus is up to date.

I also put my firewall back up.

Yeah, my firewall is through my router. It was down because I took my router to a Halo party at a friends house a few nights ago, I never got around to setting it back up.

I think everyone will agree that your mom needs to spank you in a most vigorous way. I suggest Sannop records the session and posts the .wav here.

Jeez, that sucks. Things like this happens to me also, I have norton antivirus and firewall (software only) with both up to date, but I took down the firewall one day for a little bit and then instantly these viruses started showing up (thankfully antivirus caught them) but they started showing up so fast one after the other, I finally freaked out and turned my firewall back on and they stopped.. very strange. I have since did a full scan of my computer and everything is fine since I deleted the viruses. But this kinda shit really freaked me out.

Don't worry, .wav is sound only. :)

We could post it as a warning... kinda like when I planted the severed head of my first unruly student of the year, on a post near the door to my classroom. :D

A hardware firewall is not airtight and it is a mistake to think it is. If you're running XP, disable UnPnP (uses ports 5000 and 1900). If your NAT is unpnp aware, you have a port open that can be exploited. Just disable it and use only when you need it.
Do yourself a favor and use a sw firewall like zonealarm (easy but not a "true" firewall) in addition to the router. Tiny (same as Kerio) is a full control firewall, but it takes time to get used to it and you need to know what you're doing.
Concerning Norton Internet Security, it's a rehashed version of one they bought the rights to (AtGuard I believe). It's ok, but like most everything Norton has, is so top heavy with junk it hogs resources in my opinion.

Also, anti-virus does not detect most spyware and other bugs not recognized as viruses. I prefer Pest Patrol, but there are others such as AdAware. Run a spyware detector and see what you find!

I guarentee you that it will be an adventure... First time I ran Ad-aware I was dumbfounded by the amount of CRAP that was hanging out on my PC... I had been using a different prog to clean things out, it was not NEARLY as effective...
