DSL speeds and online gaming

Thu Feb 19, 2004 6:38 pm

I am considering changing my DSL because of serious connection problems. Right now I have 1.5M/384K but the connection has been terrible for a month. I could switch to 768/128 and would probably get a solid connection with a different plan/provider. Would the slower upload/download have a serious impact on BF1942 and/or other online games?

Thanks,
Jim

I went the other direction. I went from DSL (about a 175 ping) to Cable (about 75 ping). Unfortunately my 1942 performance didn't improve much. I don't think you'll see a big hit by going to the lower bandwidth connection.

Mmmm Good has told me he thinks BF1942 likes a fat upload pipe. Keep the 384.

Yes, stick with fast upload.

The problem is being worked on but not might be resolved until the summer. It really sucks. I have been killed many times because of packet loss freezes. I did get over an hour of good play time last night with no noticable packet loss. It is sporadic.

I always said if you can't enjoy something, why do it. If a slower connection makes your gaming more enjoyable then I would do it. No sense in having a fast connection that gives out. Like having a vette and breaking down every hundred yards or so. Give me the chevette and get me to the movie on time.

Before you do anything I would be all over the providers ass about a discount during their problem time. If not, you are forced to roll is how I would put it.

It's all about your ISP. If they don't have enough bandwidth, good hardware/techs/support it doesn't matter what your speed is. I had 4mb/2mb at one time with wireless, but until they increased the bandwidth to meet the demand, it ran like crap. I now have 2mb/256k cable and can run 3 pc's on it playing BF42, so if your ISP has a good smooth connection, 128 up should work. Just make sure you check the appropriate box in the game that matches your connection speed.
Check with others that have the same ISP you're considering switching to.

P.S. I dumped wireless not because it wouldn't run the game smooth. It would run fine for several weeks, then they'd have server problems. They didn't have technicians 24/7 at the tower, so if there was a hiccup, you'd have to wait until one drove 100 miles to fix it. The technology itself is sound.
