Outsourcing works (and has work for the US for the last 100 years) as long as the US economy can replace the jobs outsourced with better ones (just like in the last 100 years.)

The key, of course, is a highly educated, adaptable workforce. Nevertheless, it's certainly a painfull process.

Dell has actually backed-off of outsourcing for corporate clients because people (myself included) complained about the communications issues.

Jeez.

I'm all for love the world and all, but it's gonna take some time for us all to figure each other the h3ll out.

I heard that Dell was abandoning their phone support centers in India. I am not sure how much truth there is in it.

I've had a really bad problem with Cisco tech support lately. They moved their call centers and now the tech support is just scripted crap not like their really good tech support before. They "engineers" just spout whatever FAQ's they have on hand and don't know more than I do which is horrible since called for help, not "oh I 'll just research this for you and call you back." This is a very disturbing trend, and yes their communications skills SUCK!

It all comes down to one thing - the bottom line = $$$.

Language is a huge barrier especially when your using computer jargon. When I first got my HP I wanted some specific specs on the MOBO and such. Every time I got a foreigner, I hung up. Thankfully it is an 800 number. One time I made the mistake of calling ATI support in Canada. $85.00 phone bill to tell me that she couldn't figure out the problem. Turns out it was a PS issue. $85.00!!!!! That would have paid for the PS. If it was a 800 number and in America I would have gotten a break on the call.

My company switched some customer support calls to our Miami office when they downsized the Jersey office. Well the Jersey office takes care of New York. So now when they call customer service our Miami office has many Cubans and latin american accents going. New York accent + latin accent = DISASTER. So in this case we thought we could make the move with downsizing but New Yorkers and latins are having a hard time communicating with each other. Who knows. I think its a bad idea overall. Great debate about this and items like NAFTA in general. My friend says "well if we made that TV in a union shop it would cost $50.00 more" I say, "well it might but at the same time we are employeeing Americans who otherwise may be on unemployment and we now have a resource to sell to another country" See, we have a huge trade defecit. We import everything anymore. If we made more at home it may cost us more in up front costs but we are employing Americans and selling to other countries. Currently we just give our money to other economies with the idea that we are saving money on the cost of the product. Long term we are not.

Along the lines of outsourcing, good article I read a while back but the best part is the last paragraph. Just the irony in it makes me laugh in disgust.
