Maxotr drive is better. 8mb chache versus 2mb on the Hitachi/IBM you currently have, as well as the maxtor is ATA133 versus ATA100 for the old one. I'd say to run the o/s and apps on the new drive, and use the older one for data storage/backup.
here's the specs on that drive:

Your new harddrive should come with a utility disk. Use that disk to set your partitions and format it use the floppy to copy it over. Only reason you should do that though is if you have lost your winblows CD.
If you have your winblows CD backup everything you don't want to loose to CD or DVD or tape (MP3, pr0n videos, save files from your favorite games) then just do format and clean install winblows, update your service packs and critical updates. Don't use MS outlook or Internet Explorer unless you have to. I know some superb things that will replace them and are more secure and FASTER! (firefox and opera alone are many times faster than IE6 but Mozzila is more stable). FireFox and Opera use segmented loading and multiple streams. SO instead of only retreaiving 1 file at a time like IE6 does they try to get everything at once, which is excellent if your on DSL or cable.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6/mozilla-win32-1.6-installer.exe <<<Mozilla (very stable IE replacement)
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.8/FirefoxSetup-0.8.exe <<<Firefox (very fast and shiney browser made by people who bring you Mozilla, good IE6 replacement)
http://www.opera.com/download/ <<<opera (comes with a built in Microsoft Outlook replacement, I would still rather use Thunderbird, just set thunderbird as default email handler and opera will use that instead. Also get java version. opera I think is the fastest browser but not the most stable. Has features that let you pick up where you left off after it crashes which is inevitable for any app and OS)
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/0.5/thunderbird-0.5-win32.zip <<<Thunderbird (Very good Microsoft Outlook replacement, it comes in a zip so you have to make your own shortcuts after you unzip)
Hope my long windedness helps.
