I think the European oil connection is probably the biggest reason certain countries won't support the US's request. France and Germany both have given a lot of 'industrial' equipment to Iraq that was clearly never meant for anything but purely military usage. They aren't happy that that was made public knowledge, and still try to deny they had any idea they were doing so. What deals, exactly, did they make? How much oil are they getting for those exchanges, what price cuts? And, do they REALLY want all of the details of those deals made public knowledge, which would happen if the US has it's way and Saddam is ousted by force.
Yeah, they do have a VERY vested interest in seeing the UN sit on it's hands and do nothing concerning Iraq, and they've gone to great lengths to see to it that the US does nothing. Just yesterday, they BLOCKED Turkey's request to the UN for defensive fortification. Mind you, Turkey isn't asking to go to war, they are asking for HELP, to prevent themselves from being attacked. France, Germany and Belgium literally blocked that from happening. Seems pretty clear to me, they do not want anyone going near Saddam. Question is, since it's THEIR countries that would actually profit more from this action then the US, why they would want it stopped?

In their "Best of the Web Today" section, Opinionjournal.com (the website of the Wall Street Journal editorial page) had an interesting link on this topic Kristov. It was a link to a blogger's site who was making similar conjectures. He imagines that the truth may be that the French and/or Germans have sold equipment to the Iraqis that is proscribed by various U.N. resolutions, perhaps with the approval of their governments. If that is the case, they would obviously prefer to keep it a secret. The beauty of this theory, as you have pointed out, is that it can explain why France and Germany are reluctant to support the U.S. plans, and even appear eager to keep Hussein in power rather than allow an occupation by the U.S. and its allies.

That NATO situation is a disgrace. I'm glad our President is talking tough in the face of it, rather than using that gobbledegook, pc, please-everybody diplospeak.
If it came down to it, I would rather the US be in trouble because of a strong leader than because of a weak one.

The amount of stupidity flowing out of France is unbelievable. At least Bukake and Doug have beliefs they are asserting. All the french seem to be asserting these days is the right to look out for their own selfish interests. This NATO agreement between France, Germany and Russia is priceless.

How could I argue with people who learned political science by watching The Simpsons (sure, french people wash a time a week, and that's why they disagree US governement, LOL) and assume "If you don't agree with me then you're both selfish and stupid" ?
Oh, and just to give a link to an edito (from the NY Times) I found interesting and with a good assumption on the french mind in this affair :

That's cool. Bag on us Americans for talking about France, then try to put us in our place with what? An editorial about the French written by an American.
An editorial by Rush Limbaugh would be less biased than the NYT anyway. You know the guy (in NYT) is off the deep end when he, while talking about French sentiments of war, decides to gratuitously throw in something about social security or medicare here in the US. It's just more of that typical class-baiting from the New York Times.

I don't bag on you because you were talking about France or its foreign affairs, but because you were saying stupidities about french people. I think that's different.
The same sort of stupidities that narrow-minded europeans say about americans : fat people fed up with hamburgers, bloodthirsty and violent cow-boys with no brain, hung-up on sex, down-to-earth always looking for more money, and so on. If you could read french (I assume you don't), and could read this sort of threads on french boards, I think you would have the same reaction than me here.

They don't hide, to be french isn't a shame. But OC48 servers are in US : from DSL in France, I have a ping of 150 (and usually 20 to a server in France). I play for fun not to win (so ping is irrelevant), I speak many langages (sorry my english is far to be perfect) and I like to play on foreign servers (my favorite server for CS was danish, I like the settings for the 0C48 BF1942 server and his community...). But most of french players play on europeans servers because of ping and langage : you won't see a lot on these boards. :p

What is your reference for decadent country ? Why would I wish to live elsewhere ? The country is in peace, pleasant to live, the economy is good enough to allow us to have everything we want or need, with a very good welfare state, and so on. I hope you don't think a country is decadent because it doesn't waste money in useless big fuckin guns (we don't really need more to protect the country) or doesn't plunder other countries ?
And BTW looking for the peace doesnt cost any lives. I have no innocent blood on my hands although your soldiers in the incoming Gulf war.

And they died for nothing, Hussein is still here!
The war will have destructive impact on the whole region, Muslim countries will portray the US as an interventionist and expansionist country and cause a new wave of anti-American and anti-Western sentiment among Arabs and Muslims, will even jeopardize the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. And after that, you are stunned a lot of people around the world hate you (not me, I like american people even I sometimes disagree what Bush does :p), unless they need you ?
I think it's an heavy price for improving Bush popularity in US and give you a little more oil and a poor revenge after Ben Laden humiliated you, even though so far there has been no evidence linking the Iraqi regime to the terrorist operations in New York and Washington ?

It doesn't matter what the US does, they hate us anyway. If the West did nothing, the Mideast would hate us just as much (if not more) for "not caring" about them. There are plenty in that region who are begging for help, but their cries are silenced by madmen like Hussein.

Come up with some good US jokes and I'll be the first to laugh. I admitted in another thread to growing up in Arkansas. So I get lots of guff about hillbillies and rednecks. All in good fun.
