ok so no one is here and i decided hmmm maybe i can play wolf for a while before anyone gets back, of course i was wrong but anyways anytime i try to start wolf i get this message:

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

anyways I looked on the internet and did all the crap like look for the line in the win.ini file that starts with DVA and put a ; behind it but i never found it in the win.ini file so i deleted all the video drivers and reinstalled them and downloaded updated ones and crap and downloaded directx and it still wont work..idk it used to work a while ago and i never had that problem...

the os is win98se
vid card is NVIDIA GEFORCE4 MX 440

if u have an ideas on how to fix it or need any more info tell me so i can tell you it...thanks

try copy pasting all your files from your rtcw folder and put it on ur desktop, then uninstall it then reinstall and then readd those things back.

when i did start > run > dxdiag under display it said:

Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

maybe that is why I cant play? I know it does have Direct3D functionality because I have played wolf with it before...and i did already download the latest drivers and latest directx so i dont know what to do anymore

I do not think its the video card at all now, I just switched the geforce 2 mx 400 into this computer (wolfenstein workd fine on that computer) and this one still get the message:

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

and when i did dxdiag again it still said:

Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

i did update all the drivers too so i dont know what is wrong any info on what to do now would be nice

This might work.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
3. On the Display tab, under DirectX Features, verify that DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration are selected.

If either of these lines shows a Disabled status, click Enable for that line.

My husband had those errors too and besides updating a driver he thought he had already, everything worked pretty much after that. Good luck:)

ive downloaded and installed all the lastest video drivers and directx so i dont know why it doesnt work im givin up unless someone else can think of a way to fix it, thanks for your help tho

all the little boxes next to the option are disabled and it says not available, i think its because under that in the notes box it says: Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

i dont know why it would say that if ive downloaded all the video drivers and directx

Hey $$$, sorry for the delay man.

Warthog is right, it has to be a driver problem. Sometimes just reinstalling or updating the drivers fscks up your registry or other hidden arcane Windows crud and 98 is a lot more susceptible to those things than XP is.

So try reinstalling everything (make sure you do what Warthog said & boot into safe mode first) and if you can get your hands on it try downgrading from DirectX 9.0c to 9.0b, I heard more win98 users complain about the new release.

If none of this helps I'd suggest either getting a registry cleaner (plenty of shareware around) or simply reinstalling windows, that seems to help most of the problems I have ;)
