Operating Systems
Does anyone here in gaming land use Lindows OS? If so, what do you think of it?
I'm hoping to upgrade my Windows 98 in the near future, but don't necessarily trust XP (for reasons I can't really articulate here).
Appreciate the feedback.

If your a bigtime gamer, XP is really the only way to go. Other OS's are becoming more compatible, but they still crop up enough problems that most gamers would go nuts spending so much time trying to get a game to work.
What exactly are you unsure about in XP? You don't need to "articulate" it, but I've been using XP for a while now so I can answer any questions you may have.

Actually, my distrust of XP is from a few months ago. I'm more open to it now. My wife uses it and she likes it. But when I first saw it, it looked like a freakin' AOL screen (I know now that you can make it look like Windows).
Lindows seems like a neat idea, and want to find out more about it before I settle on anything.
Thanks for the feedback, Bing.

Yeah, XP is very candyfied right outta the box, but that can be easily tweaked. If you're interested in the ways you can tweak the visuals of an XP desktop, check out ThemeXP. XP uses "Styles" to dictate how the desktop looks, and you can download loads from this site, or even create your own. You can make XP look like everything from Classic Windows, to XBox themed, to even an exact copy of OSX for the mac.
The main reason I upgraded from my previous OS(win98), was that although XP is a system hog, it runs games much smoother about 90% of the time. The fact that Windows is still the only OS that most game developers support and code for really makes it the only choice for games, in my opinion at least.

From what I heared, Lindows just s*cks *ss. Better stick to a MS product if you're a hardcore gamer.

If you're just a "typical" user, Home is fine, that's what I use.
Professional is really only for those that need advanced networking and file-security options. Plus the fact that Pro is a hell of a lot more expensive.
If you want to purchase XP, find a place that sells OEM versions of it. Sometimes you have to purchase a peice of hardware to be eligible for the OEM version, but you could just buy a cheapie case or hard drive and then you'd be eligible for the $90 version of XP Home.

I can agree with that. XP Home doesnt have advanced networking capability, no IIS, ... Its the cheaper version , but you get nothing...

Hmm, no experience with Lindows here, but for gaming XP is just fine. For more serious stuff, I also use Linux...
Gaming seems to be mostly windows-related at the moment (if we forget about the consoles), although some support for linux is showing up. I hope there will be some competition for MS in that area too.
