My Connection Problems

Alright, I don't know if anyone's been paying attention to the fact that I've had horrible internet for the past two and a half months (don't worry, I forgive you if you haven't ), but it's happening again after it's been claimed to have been fixed. Anyways, I tried a tracert on the BF server. I don't know if I did it right, but this is what I got:

Now, I'm assuming that those "request timed out"s are not normal. Anyways, I'm sure it's something wrong with my ISP, but I'd like to know what specifically so I can bring it up to them. If anyone has any sort of clue of what could be happening, please let me know. Thanks.

Well, it's pretty clear that the problem sits with adelphia, rigth next to you. Send them that traceroute.

around 2 years ago, i went through the same shit you are going through right now. drop their crappy service and find another ISP. try http://www.broadbandreports.com find another ISP in your area that rates well with their customers.

for me, getting Bellsouth DSL=internet bliss. i never knew good service and good customer support until i switched.

Alright, I checked out that site and it seems as if all there is around here is Adelphia (cable), and Verizon (DSL). I'd switch to Verizon as long as I knew it was reliable. However, I'm not psyched about having to ditch the cable modem we spent all that money on, and I've heard some concerns about upload speeds with DSL (seeing as BF42 uses alot of upload bandwidth, I'm wondering if that will be a problem.)

DSL upload from verizon is horrible. Do not get it, i have verizon dsl. the fastest i have seen my dsl upload was maybe 14kb/sec. but it downloads at 180....one side good other bad.

This makes me wish that I still had Comcast like I did back home. I was getting steady 20 pings, with no disconnections. Now I join games, and it's 50, and I get disconnected every 4-5 minutes. It's starting to make Battlefield unbearable.

I'm reading reviews of the DSL here and they're saying that they're getting about 137Kbps uploads, which I don't think is all that flattering, but I don't know what it is in comparison to my crappy cable modem. So I guess the question arises, do I deal with the reliable connection and crappy upload from DSL, or do I try to live with the speed of the upload from cable, but get disconnected every couple of minutes?

a 50 ping is not terrible at all, it's just the service and disconnections that are

Right. And of course they happen the worst at the peak hours of internet use (7pm-3am) which is the only entertaining time to play Battlefied.

DSL uploads at 137kb/sec or what ever is total bull shit flat out I will not lie, DSL sux big time I have it. Yea great download speeds but uploads, forget that its like 10kbs faster than friggen 56k downloads. The most I have seen my computer put out is 14kb/sec, and most of the time it's less. Try and find a different cable connection if your trouble is comming from the company and not the modem. Some times there can also be a lot of users on in your neighbor hood, different company could help.

Well, being in a college town, there are thousands of people all using it at the same time. The problem is, that I'm pretty sure there's only cable (adelphia) and DSL (Verizon). So basically, it's either a fast cable that doesn't work right, or a slower DSL that doesn't have any problems. I'll have to check and see if there's something else...

yet another uninformed internet user. just because DSL sucks in your area, doesn't mean it sux everywhere. i am quite happy with my connection. it is way better than Adelphia ever was in my area. i got so frustrated with that company, after switching to DSL, i canceled my TV cable subscription. they will never see another dollar form me.

i get 1200 down/212 up kbps(real world numbers). my ping is very steady, my speed never varies more than 10%. it has 99% uptime, no packet loss AND, get this, my upload speeds are twice as fast as Adelphia's in my area. advertised upload speed of Adelphia here is 124kbps, and may be the same for you Bagginses.

check the reliablility of Verizon again in your area Bagginses. if ya want, give me a link and i'll have a look at it for you.

having a really fast download/upload speed doesn't do you much good when you can't connect.

Horsepower, I've heard with DSL alot of your download/upload speed depends on your distance from the main line or something (can't remember what it's called). Do you know if there is a site, or a number I could call where I can ask what my distance is and what kind of speeds I will get? Thanks for the help.

DSL depends on your location to the C(entral)O(ffice). The farther away the speed decreases. I have Verizon here in Philly and they cap the residential at 1.5mbs down and 128up. Called and asked them to double the up since Comcast cable did and they said they have no plans to do it. DSL speeds also get screwed if the quality of your wires are dated. To much noise on the wires also disrupts the speed. If your on Verizon, get used to the fact that 128up is about it. Anyone tells you they have faster on Verizon they are lying or have some sort of business version. Your in State College. Do you go to school there? They should have a T1 or better for you to use.
