I'm glad they're going skyward. In my opinion, it would be tragic to not build something on an impressive scale.

The new tower will be the world's tallest structure although I do not believe people will inhabit the upper reaches of it.

Xenius, I think it's getting deluged with hits at present. I suggest that you keep trying.

It is impressive. It's obvious that a LOT of thought went into its design. Certain areas will be fully sunlit on September 11th at the exact times that the planes impacted.

You know I've always thought that "from ground level to the tip of the tower" was a poor way to measure height of a structure. Should be the highest elevation that one take a crap in a restroom! Usable living area!!!

Pelco, One of the largest maufactures of Video Security cameras has allreay made a statment to rent the top 5 spaces if there were ever to rebulid on that site. They made that statment about a week after 9/11 . if they end up bulding a structure that tall. Parachutes should be required and im sure pelco will be suppying them next to the fire hose

Isn't the spire of the whole complex just that, a spire with no livable space in it? I thought the only office space would be in the actual adjacent towers.

And would parachutes work at those heights? The CN Tower is 1800 something feet tall. The highest the public can actually go is around 1300 feet. Although it is high, when you're up there it doesn't look all that far to the ground if you were to jump off. I don't know if you a parachute would deploy in time even if you pulled the cord immediately after jumping.

The minimum safe height for experienced parachuters to deploy their chute is 2000 ft. For chute veterans, 500 feet can be achieved, but that's literally like pulling the cord and then you have 2 seconds of the chute slowing you down before you hit. Considering were talking about office employees, using a chute would be bewildering enough; worrying about whether the chute will work at those heights makes the idea almost pointless. Course that won't stop companies from selling their BRAND-NEW Employochutes for an arm and a leg.

CB, I don't have any details about the spire. I'd think that at least part of that spire structure would be habitable. It'd be pretty hard to financially justify spending that much money on that structure if none of the space was leaseable.

I'm just happy we're moving forward and I can't wait until construction starts.

Does everyone think it's going to be just a new "target" for terrorists? I'm sure when it's completed it'll rank up there as a prime candidate for another attack.

I do not however think that should deter us from building something impressive. We have to live by our rules, not theirs.
