I met the Junkyard Dog at the Wal-Mart in Waldron, Arkansas in '96 or '97. He was there selling pics, signing autographs, and promoting a youth camp he was involved with in a neighboring town. Very nice guy. Big, too.

Needless to say, my brother and I had been big fans when we were kids, and had to have our picture taken with him.

Larry Bird was behind me in line at a Burger King. He was in town for the all-star game. Guy has funky fingers. That was like 15 years ago. A more recent run-in was with Mark McGuire at a hockey game. Ran into him in the hallway running into the box seats.
"Well, we're not just gonna let you walk out of here."
"Who's we sucka!?"
"Smith and Wesson and me."

Oh, I also stood next to...are you ready for this?...Gilbert Gottfried at the Daytona Beach Airport magazine stand. I know I know, I can feel your awe from here. Didn't say hi or anything, because what can anyone say to him that he hasn't heard already.

My list of close encounters of the not quite stellar kind:

Pat Benatar
After hearing this really cool song "Heartbreaker" on the radio by Pat Benatar, I found out she came from my hometown and graduated from my high school. Shocked and astounded, I went hunting for her mothers phone number in the white pages and found it. Started hanging out with her mom a bit and went to a rockin show at the Palladium on 14th Street in NYC a little while later. Went backstage got some cool shots and then went home all crazy happy. I was 15. Went to her Moms house a few months later where she was having a private party and hung out with Pat and her band for the entire night. Flash forward to 2 years ago and I saw her and Styx at the Radio City Music Hall. Went backstage again and hooked up with her and was pleased to see she remembered me. Fun.

Chris Knight
(Peter from the Brady Bunch)
He came up to my job because he was hooked up with a software developer and they were pitching their product to Ziff-Davis. Got a picture, said hello. Nice guy.

Jon Popper
Met a hobbling Jon Popper from Blues Traveler on his way into a gig at CBGBs I was attending. He pulled up and got out on crutches (he had wacked himself on his motorcycle the previous year) and I immediately went over to him and shook his hand and told him how much I dug his music. When I mentioned that I tried to see him a few weeks before but the show sold out while I was online, he got a concerned look on his face and asked me if I was getting in tonite. I had tickets already and told him so but it was cool to know he would have got me in.

Tom Seaver
I saw Tom Seaver in a restaraunt in NYC and ran back to my table to get a menu for him to sign. Got him as he was coming out of the men's room... I was 8 or 9.

David Bowie
Saw David Bowie eating lunch at an outside Cafe uptown in NYC.

Dee Snider
Saw Dee Snider from 80s band Twisted Sister on the L.I. Railroad. He sat behind me all the way into Manhattan. I think he smelled...

Rob Scheider
when I was living on 35th street in NYC I saw Rob Scheider walking down the street. He's short.

Molly Ringwald
Took off a day in college to go to the NBC studios where "Miss Pretty in Pink" was doing an interview. Yeah this was the 80s and I was into her for god knows what reason. Saw her come into the building with her publicist yelling "She will sign after the interview" and then they all proceeded up the elevator. Over an hour later the bitch comes down and makes a beeline right out of the building, her publicist suddenly quiet and menacing. I was 2 feet away from her both times. I should have kicked her in the head.

Keith Haring
An artist from the 80s/90s who went to my college. (Free South Africa!) He gave a lecture. I went in after it was over with a freshly torn poster of the lecture in my hands and had him sign it. Have no clue if I still even have it.

Queen Amidala
2 years ago I was walking across the 4th Street by 6th avenue in NYC and walked right past Natalie Portman. She was sooooo small I was astounded. We made eye contact and I smiled. I like to think it was a warm welcoming smile of adoration but from her look it probably seemd like the grimace of a serial killer about to embark on a 3 state rampage... starting with her. Cool nonetheless.

Rebecca Gayheart
Shes that hot reaper in the Showtime series "Dead like me". Saw her in a Blockbuster round the corner from my aforementioned 35th street apt. in the 90s. She was so hot she stopped people in their tracks.

When I first came to Beach 24/7 I was trying to learn how to play 'n stuff. Didn't even know how to read the text screens in console, so only caught brief glimpses as things faded out. But I'm sure there was this guy there named Lord Zog. Apparently he's pretty famous.

Meg Ryan did a sub-shop scene at the sub-place about 30 feet away from where I work in Hamilton. No biggy. Saw them all doing a filming thing but I zapped into work and got out into the field to escape all the commotion. Apparently, about 5 hours later, it's what she wanted to do to. I was walking down a very quiet well-to-do street and who rolls by in a rented low-key Toyota but Meg Ryan. She's boppin' away to some tunes, looking very 'Meg-Ryanish', and our eyes meet. It was a cool moment. No hassles no weirdness, just two people seeing each other who will never actually meet.

had a job that afforded me the opportunity to bump shoulders and schmooz with some famous people. Probably most memorable was Mariah Carey - so into herself... poured a bottle of Evian water down the front of her shirt... lol. Also -Boyz II Men, Willem Dafoe, Tanya Tucker, that really famouse ESPN sports announcer- tall guy (hockey game with my buddy who pissed the guy off..we almost got kicked out cuz of him..lol), Meg Ryan, Stevie Wonder, Beach Boys just to name few. I was also a staff photographer for Gov. Christine Todd Whitman. In another job, i have also met some famous artists such as George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Marisol, and Paul Matisse (grandson of Henri Matisse).

anyways, life has been interesting... maybe there really is something to that 7 steps away from kevin bacon thingy..lol..

Here in Memphis usually after a rock concert or even wrestling events, you could find them hanging out at Platinum Plus (strip club). You would be surprised at even the female celebrities you would see there.
