admit i was taking shots at Bush, Doug. but his arrogance is something that the white house press corps and, the int'l community has been discussing for months now. Something I've always seen in his demeanor and now, IMO, in his actions.
Like every conservative who probably disagrees with me, i'm always amazed to hear an intelligent person back Bush, but it's all opinion.
Folic corrected me about the Congressional approval issue, and I should've been more specific (or informed heh) I generally have a problem with the War Powers Act b/c it allows the Pres to circumvent the constitution during times of crisis, and wage war with whomever, whenever. That's too much control for 1 man, and the definition of "crisis" is way too subjective, bordering on un-constitutional IMO.
Bush didn't do anything Clinton and other presidents have done in this regard, but the initial "crisis" was the response to Al Qaida and 9/11. And it was a crisis, and I supported the move into Afghanistan to destroy Al Qaida but this congressional approval and 17 hrs of debate is not the same thing as Congress declaring war on Iraq, it was a formality b/c Congress had no control, thx to the War Powers Act.
honestly he handled the 9/11 tragedy really well in those first few months before the war, I just don't agree with how he's handled Iraq, for all the reasons I've mentioned (ad nauseum)
so here's my fundamental problem w/ the whole thing:
We're just creating more hostility and animosity towards the U.S. by displaying the kind of military force and aggression that the terrorists condemn us for (with this pre-emptive strike). War, as any terrorist expert will tell you, creates more terrorists.
And walking into the Middle East, as THE Western Christian SuperPower, invading and humiliating a ME Muslim country, and following it up with a suspect plan for occupying and rebuilding, amounts to more incentive for the recruitment of new terrorists against us than anything Al Qaida could've done on its own.
IMO containment seemed to be working but Bush and Powell talked the American people into believing Iraq posed an immediate threat, and based on pure speculation, and some 2nd hand intelligence info that suited their agenda, the Bush administration declared war on Iraq. The only connection to Al Qaeda in Iraq is the one we're making now.
i'll stfu now tho
i don't expect to change any right-wing minds so yeah i'm just
enjoyed the discussion though.

euro vs dollor vs canadian dollar
Why in a poll talking about voting for a U.S pres did 5 canuckers vote? Did Quebec break away and join the yanks? If not, maybe you should have a poll about the breaking up of Canada. I say free Quebec! It's unfair to keep them in a union 60% of
them dont want and cant stand. The racist treatment the rest of Canada shows thier culture is reason to leave IMO. Only in Canada can the French be your better half. Also, will you people leave the baby seals alone.
As far as the U.S dollar, last I checked as it goes down = does the Canadian dollar(in part NAFTA), so your happy your own money is worth 1/4 the euro
now thats national pride. I see why your a world power with that type of thinking, wait! Ausi s also not a world power but yet you wont find me voting on a USA pres poll. I have enough pride to focus on my own country/PM 99% of the time(took time for this 1 post). But since so few Canadains talk about thier own country, this might give them some pride not found on ice, an open a few yanks eyes to your allys to the north. If them taking part in the poll didn't tell you alot. Never said you americans were fast j/k.

Hey Davie boy, I think we're talking about re-electing Bush, not your immature view on relations between countries. Grow up, and when you stop talking like a 15 yr old who likes to country bash like on the official EA forums, join the conversation.

I WUV you Doug. Gimme a WUG
Talking in these threads is akin to sado-masochism. It hurts as much as it feels good.
I voted only because I wanted to see how the votes went. If you don't vote, you don't get to see. Honestly, I wish such votes as this would include a neutral choice.
Dave--you mentioned the Canadian dollar failing against the Euro as it is tied in tandem to the American dollar. First of all, are you saying that it's justifiable to destroy an entire nation in order to keep your dollar statistics up? I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you on that one. Third world countries are impovrished. They are largely kept that way by the complete dominance of their economic systems by Western interests. Very little of that profit-raping gets passed on to us lay-people in first-world countries. Last I looked in most American or Canadian cities, the average people are pretty damned poor. Secondly, the Canadian dollar has risen over 10 cents against the American dollar in the last month or so. I'm not too sure, but I think it's at 72 cents right now--whereas at the tail-end of the winter we were down around 60. Buy American.
Rule of Wrist.... with your ranting about social-reforms equaling communism, and how only the tough should survive, I suppose you're all for killing off babies that even hint at any kind of genetic imperfection. Where does that stop? Only blonde-haired blue-eyed babies allowed? I'm afraid your comments were extreme and logically can only lead to a system ruled by complete anarchy. 'Kill your neighbors for their food' and all that. So much for you representing freedom and democracy.
Whether you like it or not, Rule, humans are a social creature, and have always depended on each other for survival. Social = socialism. A bitter pill of reasoning, I know, but down it with some Jack Daniels and it isn't so bad. And who knows? Maybe a socialist system where somone like Bill Gates can't make 400 billion dollars while infants across America starve to death isn't a bad idea. Bad me. I'll stand in a corner now. It's the American Dream, and, by proxy, the smoke-and-mirror dream of all 'Western' nations, to 'be' Bill Gates. Anywhere else, or at any other time in history such a position would be called a tyranny, but now it is a dream.
Hmm...too tired to continue

I think that all of the "social programs" that Keek mentioned are just fancy names for communism, a failed system that goes against human nature, and should be abandoned and forgotten. Social Security, welfare, affirmative action, progressive tax rates... all are methods to redistribute wealth to people who didn't make it.
I'll tell that to myself the next time the tv season ends, and as an animator, I have to go in hiatus. I won't accept money from a government "social" program that I pay into. Sure, not all social programs work, but I think we've done a fine job with them in Canada.
And Dave, get a clue about something will you. Quebec never seperates because QUEBECER's keep voting to stay within the commonwealth - I thnk you have your 60/40 numbers mixed up. And as for currency, just because one dollar goes down, doesn't mean they all do. Because of the war, America's dollar has gone down a bit naturally, but Canada's has risen to it's highest point in decades.

Since I was referred to by name, I shall respond...
There is no need to actively kill the infirm or disabled. They are given the same oppurtunity to survive as anyone else. They just receive no help from the GOVERNMENT. They can get all of the help they might find from people who want to help them (i.e. charities). They have the same chance that I have (equal OPPURTUNITY, not EQUALITY... No one is really equal IMO)
Charities, by nature, are given money voluntarily. Governments who take money to provide for the infirm out of the blue have a captive audience. That is the difference.
Bingham, I don't know a whole lot about the canadian system, so I can't say to much about it either way. I will ask you this though... If you had the choice to opt out of the various programs you pay for through taxes and keep the money for your own use, would you? Would this be enough to see you through your hiatus?
I don't have time to formulate a truly cohesive response at this time, so I'll get back to this... bet you guys can't wait

Man, this gives me a headache.
"We're just creating more hostility and animosity towards the U.S. by displaying the kind of military force and aggression that the terrorists condemn us for (with this pre-emptive strike)."
Actually, they hate us for our presence in Saudi Arabia, who WANTED our protection from Iraq. In recent years our military's missions have been to protect Muslims (Kosovo, Somalia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc.). Had we not fought for Muslims, they would hate us just as much. It's a no-win situation for the U.S.
If we minded our own business we would be considered heartless and would be hated.
If we decided to try to hold hands and sing for peace, we would be seen as weak and unwilling to protect ourselves; we would be hated and ridiculed.
I have an important question: If Bush is so stupid, how could he be so ingenius to pull off such crazy, imaginative scams?
I'm all verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves.

Personally, I wouldn't opt out. In my line of business, hiatus, layoffs, whatever you may call it, are virtually guaranteed every year. The taxes I pay, while high in Canada, are less than I could save for my time off(which can range from a month to a full year). It's a lot like insurance, everyone pays into it, not everyone will collect, but it's there for those that need it. It's nice to know that in the event I'm laid off, I can start recieving $1000 a month by simply doing a 10-minute online application, and knowing it's not a true handout since I paid into it.
I can see your point of view though. In america, institutions like welfare were cesspools of corruption and fraud for a long time. It was the same in Canada too a while back, But where the US has dragged it's feet, Canada has really stepped up and cases of fraud these days are few and far between, and those that do commit fraud are issued massive fines if not jailtime.
And yeah, paying into things like Unemployment Insurance can be a drag if you forsee never needing to collect it. But many people thank their lucky stars if they're suddenly laid off and they have bills to pay, even if they have every intention of immediately going out to find a new job.
