We lost power at 4:14pm we had power restore at 12:30 am.
I found most people were very good about the blackout. I had to drive home from work and had to go through 45 lights and people were very good about letting the next guy go !!
When I got home all the neighbors were outside and we
talked until it got dark. That's the longest I every talked to
my neighbors. At night we listened to a battary power AM radio
by candle light from the basement where it was cool.

Why does it take something like this for people, even strangers, to get together and be nice?
well gusbenz should have answered that one, I think its just that people get far too into their electronics or their favorite TV shows to bother with neighbors. then when they need something to do cause the power is out, they'll gladly bother the neighbor, who also wants to bother them back, so since they're both taking the place of eachothers entertainment, they become entertained.

Yeah, it seems like disaster brings people together. Let's go around North Amderica causing destruction, and before you know it, world peace will be achieved!
Blow up the Hoover Dam, topple the Washington Monument, slam a few passenger trains together....... why, it sounds like bliss already.

TV and the Internet have killed that. Now we're all isolated even though we live together. That's why there's no porches anymore in front of houses and living rooms have been replaced with TV rooms or home theaters.
Reading books like Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine makes me long for those simpler times when people were always acting like in Nightvision's post.
I've just spent a month in a place with no TV but plenty of human interaction (real, not virtual), and I'd gladly live my whole life like that.

well not everyone got along so well. US officials blamed Canada, Canadian officials blamed the US.
A lighting bolt struck a power plant in Niagara falls on the US side right? That's what I've seen reported. Funny how an isolated event like that can trigger the whole grid to go down, making 50 million people lose power.
