Cable Modem Problems
My question is this: Will resetting my modem to factory defaults screw up my connection? My modem has been acting plain retarted the last month or so. It just keeps cycling on and off causing loss of connection just about every 30 mins. I want to reset to default but i dont want my ISP to have to come to me and set everything up again which will take god knows how long.
Also is it normal for the activity light to constantly flash even when no one is online or no comps or on?!? Hackers? Ive run antivirus and anti spyware progs to eliminate the obvious causes. But still have probs.
I have a Surfboard SB4100 cable modem.

I dont find that normal, you better take a look at the traffic with a packet sniffer.
In verizon DSL every 30 min or so, the DHCP server sends a broadcast asking if any one is using X ip, that goes on for a few minutes.
The activity that you notice might be messages from the DHCP server. ??????

Yeah hmmmmm. The activity light is constant almost solid when no one is on. Which i find weird as when I first got it like a year or 2 ago i dont remember that happening. The thing that pushed me over edge is just yesterday I put it in standby mode which normally blacks out all the lights but for some reason like 3 or 4 mins after i set it to standby the activity light pops on and stays on when no other lights are on?!?!
More specs I connect thru a linksys router and theres like 4 others on network. But Ive taken out router and connected direct to me and still have probs. Win 2000
I guess I'll reset it in a little while. But if you dont hear from me in 2 to 100 days you know why:freak: Ill give this thread a little longer before resetting it.

I'dd just try basic stuff if you haven't, unplug it and let it reconnect, see what happens, I've heard even taking your physical cable and turning it around, so the end that went to the modem goes to the filter and the filter end then of course goes to the modem, you may want to just do that to make sure its not something really simple. Hope this helps somewhat.
