P4 2.4c 's kick ass!!!!

Postby Edogg » Thu Sep 25, 2003 5:24 pm

today I decided to see what I could do with my new 2.4c. and geil golden dragon pc 3500.

Now Ive heard that these chips were great overclockers, but this is just plain ridiculous. I basically oced by 100 mhz increments , and then tested out the new settings every time.
I was able to post, boot into windows, and run a complete 3dmark 2k1 bench all the way through at 3.4ghz at stock voltage(1.525). I then tried 3.5 ghz at stock volts which booted into windows and ran about two 2k1 tests before it kicked me back to the desktop.

here are some cpu-z screenshots:

You got a good one. I am at 3.3 on mine, but higher volts. You shoudl get even higher if you knock that vcore up. You are safe up to 1.7. What kind of cooling you running? What motherboard you runnign that on?

The board is an Abit Is7-e using the 1.5 bios.
My cpu cooler is a swiftech mcx4000 with a 84 cfm tornado fan on it. My case has 5 thermaltake smart fan IIs and 1 enermax.

I've got a 2.4b and it doesn't overclock very well. you're lucky.

if I have my CPU overclocked, 2 times outta ten it will boot into the bios

Shock, That is the Asus board, if windows and games run stable, you just have to deal with the cold boot issue.

Edogg, bump that Vcore up man, and get some more out of that thing.

If you had the money, I was say go vapo chilling, that CPU could easiy get to the top half of the 3's.

Ill try upping the vcore to 1.575 tomorrow . Im a little leary about going too high after my previous vcore experience.:rotflmao: I dont have time to do it tonight because I have to leave for a night class in about 5 minutes.

If I had a prommie or a vapo I could almost guarantee this chip would hit 4ghz.

i'm using 1.6vcore on my 2.4c @3.0. i'm using Intel stock cooler and temps are reasonable.

ok can someone help me out with this? My 2.4 can't overclock to 2.7, I just tried with stock cooling, and it froze in my XP account. When I reset the speed to 2.4, my windows account was corrputed and I had to run chkdsk 4 times to fix the damn thing, and lots of files are messed up.

I guess this chip doesn't OC very well...or the mobo is a piece of SHIT.

If it can't OC to 2.7 then theres no point in OC at all, it's not like I'm gonna get a performance increase with 100 mhz :(

Um that usually means you either need to bump the voltage up, or get better cooling. Usually voltage first as P4 2.4Bs can take 60 degrees celcius temps. Case in point, my 2.66 won't O'C to 3Ghz on stock voltage, she will however do 3.2Ghz if I raise voltage up by .2volts on a Vantec Aeroflow with TMD fan.

What kind of motherboard you have?

1. you are using pc2100 ram, which is most likely not up to the challenge of overclocking a 2.4b. Especially if you are using a 1:1 fsb:ram ratio. try using a 5:4 or a 3:2 ratio and raise your memory timings.

2. your power supply may be too weak to support overclocking, especially if you start playing with voltage settings.

3. you may just have an unlucky processor, Or you need to raise core voltage. This I do not recommend seeing as you have stock cooling and have already corrupted windows.

My suggestion for you is not to overclock anymore with that current system. You have stock cooling, and have already messed up windows it sounds like. You should reformat and do a clean install of windows, or you might still have some trouble even though you think you have repaired it.

You really should never overclock a system that was never built with the intention of overclocking. There are lots of things that I planned out wih my current setup so that it would overclock right. I have a high quality power supply. I have a roomy aluminum case with plenty of fans for ventillation. I have a huge heat sink and powerful fan for cpu cooling. i have a motherboard that is designed for overclocking. Im using pretty good quality pc3500 ram so i can reach high front side bus speeds. finally, I bought a processor that is known to be a good overclocker.

nah Im used to it. I go to lots of heavy metal concerts, and I used to have two MTX 15 inch subwoofers in my car.;) A few loud fans dont bother me a bit.

Windows corruptions like that are from overclocking your ram too high. What type of ram is it? What is it currently runnign at? What did you try to run it at?

Well I was able to bench at 3.5 ghz with 1.575 volts. Then I tried 3.6ghz at 1.575 volts but 2k1 kicked me back to the desktop. I bumped the vcore to 1.6 volts and was able run stable and complete a bench.

That is about as far as Im going to push it with my aircooling.
Its getting to the point where my memory is going to start holding me back. I tried benching with a 300fsb with a 5:4 divider @ 3,8,4,4(slowest timings possible) and I was getting some weird artifacts so i cancelled it. I dropped it down to a 3:2 divider @ 2,6,3,3 and it ran fine.

This is the best benchmark I was able to put up:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7042506

I should be able to put up a higher score with some higher clocks on my 5900 and different drivers. After that, I would need 2 sticks of some faster memory so I could run at a 5:4 divider in dual channel mode.

here is my best overclock screenshot. Just look at that 300 fsb(1200):D
