LCD's and gaming

Ok, questions for all you LCD owners out there, since I may finally replace my aging 19"CRT Dell Trinitron with an LCD......

1. Do you find ghosting to be a problem during gaming? If so, do you use analog or digital to connect to your vid card? If no, what brand/model do you use, and what's the response time on it?

2. If you can't run the native resolution on your monitor due to FPS issues at the res, or the game not supporting it, etc, How bad does it look? And can you compensate for it with AA/AF?

Any other advice/input/etc would be greatly appreciated......

Don't get and LCD, that's my advice. You can get CRT's with a better picture and at a cheaper price, so the only reason to get a LCD is lack of desktop space. If you've got the space, then there's no reason at all to get one.

Just because something's "new and hi-tech" doesn't mean it's better. Much like how an old amp from the 70's will beat the tar out of pretty-much anything produced today, a CRT is just plain better than even the most expensive LCD today.

If you get an LCD, because of the ghosting, it will be very difficult to stay accurate.

if you wanna game with LCD's, you'll have to keep some things in mind.

First off, buy one with the LOWEST RESPONSE TIME YOU CAN FIND. 13 ms response time is the lowest, and they're VERY expensive. 16 ms is what most gamers consider the MINIMUM. I have a 50 ms response time (bought my LCD when they were sort of new, so I had to buy a CRT so I could play BF, BIG waste of money)

Second, if you can't play at native resolution, you're screwed. The picture is HORRIBLE, it doesn't matter what LCD you use. All of them look bad. bad bad bad. For that reason, it's not a good idea to purchase an LCD with a native rez of 1600 X 1200. You'll have to keep ur computer up to date with the best vid cards to keep getting good frame rates so you can keep your native res.

you can't compensate with AA/AF. it's still too fuzzy.

my LCD has both analog and DVI, I notice no difference between the two.

so....my recommendation: buy a flat screen CRT. Instead of spending the ton of money on an LCD, drop it on a 21" Flat screen CRT that has super HIGH refresh rate, so you can take full advantage of that 9800pro you have without seeing texture ripping

LCD's aren't optimal for gaming yet, and you still run the risk of having one with a few dead pixels. For surfing the net with one, like I do, is fine, but for gaming, your best bet is CRT.

And Bullhead, I know you frequent Rage3d! You should ask there, you'd get a LOT of responses, and there are already a ton of posts on that topic.

Tell me what you chose to do! I'd like to know

I use a 19" Samsung LCD and have 0 ghosting.

Can you plz tell me what kind of samsung lcd it is buliwyf, cause when I graduate i'm going to build my own computer with a LCD, and the best card (assuming it will be around $600)

Buli, do you know what the response time is on it? And are you using analog or DVI?

Shockwave, I'd forgotten about it, mostly b/c alot of the people on the forum are smacktards who like to insult other people, so I'd not even thought about it. Probably worth a shot, though

response time on mine is 25ms. not the best but far from being the worst.

DELL just announced a 16ms 19" LCD coming out in the next few months. You may want to wait.

IMO stick with a CRT unless you're really hurting for space. I have a pretty big home office and I use a 21inch Sony G520, nothing beats it and you can find them around for good deals.

Also, you can get a 19inch NEC CRT from newegg.com for $255. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

I just have to laugh at everyone with the STICK WITH A CRT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH run for your lives, response.

I am telling you from experience, i have had NO ghosting or any other visual problems with my LCD. Do other LCDs ghost? of course, but mine has not.

my buddy games with a 25ms response time LCD, and I can see a difference between that and a CRT.

The picture quality is nice as hell, but when you're moving fast, there is slight ghosting, and is quite noticeable. Atleast it is to me. That's why, for that kind of money, I'd suggest getting a really good CRT, but to each his own.

Check out his review. I had a demo Sony that was not bad. I have also tried the Ilyama. Tough to find now but it was pretty good. I recommend actually trying it out if you can. Some people like them.. some don't.
