Stop the damn POPUPS!
Anyone know of a good popup stopper? Maybe one that doesn't cost money?

HaVoc, are you running adadware or Spybot Search and
Destroy?
spyware can cause most of those pop-ups, get rid of the
source (the spyware).
link to free Spybot ---> http://www.safer-networking.org/
if all you need is popup stopper, some of the regulars
recomend this http://www.panicware.com/
"Aim small, miss small" The Patriot
"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast" Bob Lee Swagger
"There is but one path, we kill them all" Spartacus:Blood and Sand
"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast" Bob Lee Swagger
"There is but one path, we kill them all" Spartacus:Blood and Sand
Yeah I have messenger disabled and I run spybot.
HELP!
HELP!

Use Netscape and you won't get them...
For Exploder, I use Meaya. The again, I don't use Exploder anymore.
Outpost Firewall has it built in too.
Be careful of "free" popup blockers as some have spyware, nags etc.
edit: y, i think i used the popup blocker from panicware, but the Meaya was the best. http://www.meaya.com/

Yes, it is called Popup Stopper, which is the one from panicware. It is by far the best, and I have it set where I only need to hold down the left Ctrl button for when i want a pop up to pop up.
You don't need any special software to stop pop-ups. Just be aware of what applications are running on your PCs.
Also keep an eye on your home-page. Make sure it doesn't mysteriously change.
Also, don't EVER download or use an enhanced "Search" feature (My Search, My Web and alll that BS).
I have 4 PCs (and about 200 client PCs that I maintain) and I keep them simple. No extra BS and their pop-ups are almost no-existant.
Things change over time, though, so I'm forced to constantly monitor them.
It all comes down to end-user education. Most of the pop-up/spyware crap is aimed at impatient kids and naive users.

Sorry, but not all pop ups can be turned off in Windows. Popup stopper gets those last few.
Some sites are worse that others when it comes to pop-ups. I just avoid those sites.
Dell has pop-ups about their specials, but I can deal with one or two pop-ups.
When 16 pop-up ads appear simply by bootingmy PC, then something is wrong.
I like to keep things simple. I hate running any extra software on my machine, especially if I can solve the initial problem simply by adjusting my browsing habits and/or awareness of what's running on my PC.

Ughhh I've been having the same problems as Havoc. I used to run Spybot and PCillin and clean out all the cookies and that used to work but as of about a month ago there is this onslaught of the same 5 or 6 popups about every 2 hours or so that I can't seem to get rid of. Just now my homepage had changed. It seems the spyware that spybot removes keeps coming back somehow something like "DYFUCA" even if I dont use the computer after cleaning for a few days it comes back.
The thing that gets me is if I'm in a game like Battlefield and usually in the middle of a fight they popup switching me back to desktop and 90% of the time Battlefield will just disapear and I have to restart. Overheard someone saying that conflicting resolutions cause this.?
But by God I'm like a day or 2 from just formatting my whole damn drive. Maybe then the maps won't take 10 years to load.

Ok... to be honest, the absoute BEST pop-up stopper is Stop-The-Pop. I've always been on the lookout for the best pop-up stopper, and after literly dozens of downloads, I came across this one.
http://download.com.com/3000-7786-10144469.html?tag=lst-0-6
The best. It even has an option that allows IE windows ONLY to come up if you hold control, shift or a. Its simply the best.. hands down.
